This is likely one of the most famous early Torii school images, and the most famous image of Danjūrō I.The artist's signature is in the lower-righthand corner, just above the seals. Though one might expect it to simply read 鳥居清倍 (Torii Kiyomasu), it in fact read 鳥居氏清倍 (Torii-shi Kiyomasu); shi means family or clan.
