English: This late 1960s photograph showed four Nigerian children who were in a refugee relief camp during the Nigerian-Biafran civil war. Note one of the children on the left has light hair, which is a symptom indicative of kwashiorkor, a disease brought on due to severe dietary protein deficiency. Many of the children that were weak and listless, needed much in the way of nursing care in order to survive. These relief camps provided feeding wards where doctors, including CDC EIS officer Godfrey P. Oakley, Jr., M.D.,, were on call 24 hours a day, monitoring 100 or more stage-four kwashiorkor children.
