თავდაპირველად ის დასავლეთ-ევროპული ფოლკლორის პერსონაჟი იყო, მაგრამ მსგავსი დამახასიათებელი ნიშნების არსებები თითქმის ყველა კულტურის მითოლოგიაში გვხვდება (მათ შორის დასავლეთ-ქართულ მითოლოგიაში, სადაც მოიხსენიებენ, როგორც მგელკაცას). ჩვეულებრივ, მაქციის წყევლისგან გათავისუფლება შეუძლებელია.
