ომის წამოწყების შესახებ რამდენიმე თეორია არსებობს. ტრადიციული ხედვა ხაზს უსვამს პარაგვაის პრეზიდენტ [[ფრანსისკო სოლანო ლოპესი]]ს აგრესიულ პოლიტიკას, რომელიც მიმართული იყო ვერცხლის საბადოებისკენ. ამის საპირისპიროდ, ტრადიციული პარაგვაული ხედვა და არგენტინული რევიზიონიზმი 1860-იანი წლებიდან ყურადღებას [[ბრიტანეთის იმპერია|ბრიტანეთის იმპერიის]] ინტერესების გაბატონებულ როლზე ამახვილებს. ომი [[1864]] წლის ბოლოს დაიწყო ბრაზილიასა და პარაგვაის შორის მომხდარი საბრძოლო ოპერაციებით. უკვე [[1865]] წლიდან, ომი ნამდვილად შეიძლება შეფასდეს, როგორც „სამთა ალიანსის ომი“.
